Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom Teeth Extractions in Vienna, VA

Most people have their wisdom teeth removed at some point in their lives. Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that erupt in the back of the mouth, typically around the age of 18. While they are not necessary for chewing or speaking, they can cause problems if they become impacted in your jaw or grow at an angle.

Extractions are a common procedure we perform at our practice, and we have many qualified oral surgeons. Dr. Akbar Dawood, DMD has several years of experience in extracting them safely and effectively. If you have wisdom teeth causing problems, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with our office to have them removed.

Who needs their wisdom teeth extracted?

Many people have them extracted because they crowd surrounding teeth in the mouth or come in at an angle, which can cause jaw bone pain. When these teeth come in at an angle, they can damage adjacent teeth or even grow into the cheek. Having your wisdom teeth extracted can also prevent future problems, such as tooth decay or gum disease. Some people opt to have them removed even if they’re not causing any problems because it’s easier to care for teeth all the same size. Talk to Dr. Akbar Dawood, DMD to see whether wisdom teeth extraction is right for you.

The Wisdom Tooth Removal Procedure

The extraction procedure is performed by Dr. Akbar Dawood DMD under general and local anesthesia. Once you are fully sedated, your oral surgeon can begin the extraction. During the procedure, they will make an incision in the gums and then remove the wisdom tooth or teeth. The oral surgeon will then stitch closed the incision site. The entire procedure usually takes between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of teeth and the complexity of the extraction.

The recovery following a wisdom tooth extraction can take a few days to a week. You will likely experience some swelling and bruising during this time. You will also need to eat soft foods and take pain medication as directed by your oral surgeon. Once your mouth has healed, you will be able to return to your regular diet and activities.

Wisdom Teeth Removal FAQ

If they come in angled or misaligned, wisdom teeth can cause other teeth to crowd and cause problems with chewing or speaking. When wisdom teeth erupt at an angle, they can push other teeth out of alignment. This can damage the roots of healthy teeth and lead to a broken tooth, infected tooth, or decayed tooth. As a result, they can indirectly lead to the need for other tooth extractions and more dental work.
While wisdom teeth are commonly extracted, they don’t always need to be removed. If they come in straight and are not impacted, they can often be left alone. However, if your wisdom teeth are causing crowding or problems with your bite, they may need to be removed.
The best age to have wisdom teeth removed is typically between 16-18 years. This is because the roots of the teeth are not fully developed at this age, which makes the tooth extraction process easier. Wisdom teeth can be removed at any age, but it may be more challenging to extract them if they are impacted or have grown in at an angle.

In certain cases, the roots of wisdom teeth are close to or have grown into the nerve in the lower jaw. This nerve provides feeling to the lower jaw. In order to minimize risk of damage to the nerve a procedure called coronectomy can be performed . Dr. Dawood is an expert at performing this procedure and not only has he performed hundreds of this procedure but has also taught it to students and residents
