Sinus Lift
Sinus Lift in Vienna, VA
If you seek to have implants in the upper jaw but are not able to do so due to the position of the maxillary sinus, then you could be a good candidate for a sinus lift. A sinus lift is a surgical procedure that can help to improve the function of your sinuses and make it easier for you to receive dental implants.
At Virginia Oral Surgery Specialists, our board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon offers sinus lift surgery to our patients in Vienna throughout Northern Virginia.
What is sinus lift surgery?
Sinus lift surgery also called sinus augmentation, is a surgical bone grafting procedure performed to increase the height of the sinus floor. The sinus membrane is an air-filled cavity located behind the cheeks and forehead. A sinus lift is performed by making an incision in the gum tissue and then lifting it away from the upper jaw. Bone grafting material will then be placed beneath the sinus cavity, and the incision is closed.
The surgery typically takes approximately two hours to complete, and patients can expect to experience some swelling and bruising afterward. Recovery from sinus lift generally takes about four to six weeks.

Who needs a sinus lift?
This can be necessary when the patient has suffered from bone loss, and there is not enough to support dental implants. The sinuses are the cavities behind the cheekbones and above the roots of the upper teeth. When these sinuses become enlarged, they can push down on the bones and reduce the space available for dental implants. Sinus augmentation can help correct this by adding new bone to the area. This can often be done using bone from another part of the patient’s body, but the artificial bone may also be used.
